The Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi today unveiled a 49-inch Android-based smart TV for the equivalent of just $640. That arguably wouldn't be a bad price even if it were just a 1080p model, but the "MI TV 2" sports a full 4K resolution that makes it a potential bargain -- at least for shoppers in the Far East.

Only HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort or an (inconvenient) multi-cable solution will be capable of delivering a frame-rate above 30 frames per second, which is important to anyone who might want to use the display for more than just watching movies or TV -- for example, as a monitor or HTPC display. Many buyers of the Seiki 4K TV, for example, have come up against this barrier, and Xiaomi hasn't made it clear whether its new MI TV 2 will support higher frame rates.
On the other hand, Xiaomi's product does demonstrate that the cost of 4K components is falling rapidly, since the MI TV 2's $640 asking price buys many additional features that 4K TVs in the US don't currently offer. As already mentioned, these include the presence of the Android operating system, which is running on a MediaTek chip with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and microSD expansion. Xiaomi is also supplying a Bluetooth remote and a detached Bluetooth subwoofer and sound bar, which should give the TV some audio oomph while you're streaming House of Cards in Ultra HD.
Will the MI TV 2 ever reach the West? According to my Engadget colleague, Richard Lai, there's little chance of this happening in the near future, especially since Xiaomi struggled to manufacture significant numbers of the original (non-4K) MI TV. As things stands, the only availability that has been confirmed is for the domestic Chinese market, starting on May 27th.
