Formatting a hard drive erases all data stored on the device. When Windows is initially installed to a drive, the device is formatted and then the Windows file system is set up on the disk. The Acer Aspire includes a utility, called Acer eRecovery Management, that reformats and reinstalls the Windows operating system. If your laptop is running slow and it's impacting your work performance, reformatting the drive can improve the operating speed of your computer. You can also use eRecovery to restore the OS if Windows no longer boots. Back up any business-related files prior to using the software so you won't lose important data.

Click 'Start | All Programs | Acer | Acer eRecovery Management.' On the Restore tab, select 'Restore System to Factory Default.'

Click 'Yes' when prompted and then click 'Start.' Confirm that the power adapter is connected to the Acer Aspire.

Click 'OK' to restart the computer. Acer eRecovery Management will reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Click 'OK' when the process completes. The computer will restart. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up Windows.
Tips
- If you are unable to boot into Windows, turn on or restart the Aspire and press 'Alt-F10' at the boot screen to load Acer eRecovery Management.
- Depending on your Aspire model, you may need to select 'Start | All Programs | Empowering Technology | Acer eRecovery Management' to access the application.
